For some collectors, being able to see their dolls even while in storage is a priority. While this goes against the standard “dark storage” rule, it can be done safely with the right equipment and environment. Clear storage is all about creating a display-like setup that still offers protection from dust and damage, with the absolute condition that the entire room is kept dark.
Acrylic Display Cases are the premium option. These offer museum-quality clarity and are often built to be more airtight than standard bins, providing excellent dust protection. You can have a doll standing (with a proper stand) or posed inside. However, this is only safe if the case is located in a windowless room or a large walk-in closet where the lights are always off.
A more budget-friendly choice is a large, high-quality clear plastic storage bin. Look for sturdy models made from polycarbonate or acrylic that won’t yellow over time. You can line the bottom with a white fleece blanket to provide a soft, non-staining base.
In either case, the number one rule is NO LIGHT. UV radiation is the enemy and will pass directly through a clear container. If there is any risk of ambient light, you can apply a UV-blocking film (the same kind used on windows) directly to the clear box. This provides an invisible layer of protection, allowing for visibility while filtering out the most damaging light rays.
